What is Rupeek?
Rupeek is India’s leading asset-backed, digital lending fintech platform. Driven by the mission to make credit accessible to Indians in a fair and convenient way, Rupeek is pioneering innovative financial products to help monetize India’s $2 trillion gold.

Case-Study: Designing for Rupeek's Rewards Program.
Problem Statement: I was tasked with designing for rewards program for Rupeek's new Credit Card product. The challenge was to create a program that incentivized credit card usage and user retention for two distinct customer segments:
Independent Users: New customers applying for the Credit Card without an existing gold loan.
Cross-Sell Users: Existing Rupeek gold loan customers offered the Credit Card as an additional product.
Design Challenges:
Complex Reward System Simplification: Designing an intuitive interface and user experience for a multifaceted rewards system featuring gold coin and gold cashback rewards, each with unique eligibility criteria and redemption processes, posed a significant challenge. Ensuring clarity and simplicity in communicating these intricate reward structures to users was paramount to enhancing usability and satisfaction.
Engagement and Retention Strategy: Designing a reward system capable of effectively engaging users in spending activities while fostering long-term retention without overwhelming or discouraging them presented a nuanced challenge. Striking a delicate balance between the frequency and magnitude of rewards to sustain user interest without imposing unsustainable burdens on the company's resources demanded careful consideration and strategic design decisions.
Clarity and Transparency in Communication: Ensuring crystal-clear communication of the reward structure to users to prevent any potential confusion or misunderstanding regarding the processes for earning, redeeming, and the associated terms and conditions emerged as a primary focus. Transparent and comprehensible communication pathways were indispensable to fostering user trust and satisfaction.
User Education Initiative: Designing educational materials or features to empower users with a comprehensive understanding of the rewards program, its benefits, functionalities, and optimization strategies emerged as an essential endeavor. The development of clear and accessible documentation, tooltips, or tutorials played a pivotal role in facilitating effective user onboarding and maximizing user engagement with the rewards program.
Research:
While formal user research wasn't conducted due to time constraints and established reward structures, I actively sought insights from internal stakeholders.
I engaged in regular discussions with the product-business team to understand their vision for the rewards program and user acquisition/retention goals. This collaboration helped me grasp the existing user segments and their potential motivations for credit card usage.
Approach:
Collaboration with Product-Business Team: I initiated discussions with the product-business team to gain a deep understanding of the existing reward structure and user requirements. Through these discussions, I identified the need to improve user comprehension of the reward system and explored strategies to enhance user engagement and retention.
Exploration of Gamification Concepts: Recognizing the potential of gamification to drive user engagement, I proposed integrating gamified elements into the UI design. Collaborating with the product-business team, we discussed gamification strategies tailored to incentivize user participation and reinforce desired behaviors within the reward program.
Engagement with Development Team: To ensure the feasibility of proposed UI features and gamification elements, I collaborated closely with the development team. Together, we evaluated technical constraints and feasibility, identifying opportunities to integrate gamified features while maintaining system performance and scalability.
Iterative Design Discussions: Throughout the design process, I facilitated iterative discussions with both the product-business and development teams. We reviewed UI mockups, discussed feature integration, and prioritized design elements based on user impact and technical feasibility.
Decision Making and Feature Prioritization: Drawing on insights from collaborative discussions and team feedback, I made informed design decisions to optimize the UI for user understanding and engagement. We prioritized features that aligned with the product vision and offered the greatest potential for enhancing user retention. the product vision and offered the greatest potential for enhancing user retentio
Learnings: This project presented valuable learning opportunities within a context of established requirements and limited user research.
Here are some key takeaways:
Importance of Stakeholder Collaboration: Collaborating with product and business teams proved crucial for understanding user segments, program goals, and potential user pain points related to rewards programs. This indirect user understanding helped shape the design direction.
Adapting UI for Clarity & Engagement: Given the pre-defined reward structure, focusing on clear communication within the UI was essential. This reinforced the importance of user-centered design principles even when core functionality is established.
Leveraging Gamification for User Retention: Exploring gamification strategies within the UI boundaries highlighted its potential to increase user engagement and incentivize consistent credit card usage. This experience reinforces the value of gamification in driving user behavior.
Balancing User Needs with Development Constraints: Partnering with the development team showcased the importance of understanding technical feasibility. Balancing user needs with practical limitations fostered a more realistic and achievable design solution.
Overall, this project emphasized the importance of adapting design approaches to specific project parameters. It highlighted the ability to prioritize user understanding and retention strategies, even within established frameworks. The experience further emphasized the value of inter-departmental collaboration and communication in crafting successful product experiences.
